Czech Republic deserves to be known in many respects, so take your camera and walking shoes and get ready to explore it.

The national railway network of Czech Republic is made up of over 9,000 km of tracks. České dráhy also known as Czech Railways is the national railway operator in Czech Republic. The country has international rail connections with bordering countries including Slovakia, Austria, Germany and Poland. Major cities which are also main travel hubs are Prague, Břeclav and Ostrava. The busiest railway station of Czech Republic is found in Prague, the capital city. Indeed the Praha hlavní nádraží, also known as Prague main railway station, served over 20 million passengers in 2014.

The Czech Republic is all about ancient cities, stone castles and ruins on cliffs, palaces in gardens, lofty religious monuments, folk architecture and traditions, museums, galleries, musical experiences, cultural festivals, cosmopolitan Prague and soothing spa towns. Located in Central Europe, the Czech Republic is bordered by Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Austria. Prague, its capital city, is 4h30 away by train from Berlin and is the ideal springboard to discover other main cities and regions of the Czech Republic. If you are looking for the right travel stories, it’s worth visiting.

Of course there is the magnificent Czech Republic’s capital, Prague that obviously is worth the visit. But do not forget to discover the rest of the country. Take a train and cross it all to get this new country built on an ancient one. The must-see cities you should experience are probably Ceské Budejovice, Liberec and Ceské Kladno.

The landscape is marked out with castles that are waiting for you. On the western side of Czech Republic, admire the undulating basin of Bohemia and climb the Giant Mountains (1602 m high). This will be perfect for those who love nature and sports.

Take home

Bohemian part of the country provides a good-value: crystal! Other typical souvenirs you can get will be marionettes and wooden toys. If you prefer precious stones, you can find garnets or jantar.

Eat and Drink

If you travel by train from city to city, you may try sausages (Klobasa), with beer (or Absinth, which is stronger). You will soon see for yourself the difference from one region to another. If you are not on diet, try dumplings and sauerkraut.

New Perspective

Enjoy the historic villages and vineyards of Valtice and Mikulov and taste the wines. Those are on the southern part of Czech Republic, in the region of Moravia, that you can reach by train, and visit cycling to fully admire the landscape.

    Think twice |
"What can we say when the coach stewardess does not speak either English or Italian (and the train traverses Italy), the coach does not have any drinking water dispenser, and there was no packaged drinking water on board available for sale! The aircon did not work until 30 min.s into the journey, and it was circa 35 degrees C. The lighting did not work properly - one dim ceiling light only, and no reading lamps. And the coach stewardess was in the adjoining cabin and smoked in the cabin - against the carriers own regulations - so that her 2nd hand smoke drifted straight out her window and into ours, and permeated the A/C once it began working. First time travel |
"The only problem with this service is that there is NO baggage storage area for large suitcases on this train. The overhead racks can only take small suitcases and back packs meaning you have to keep the suitcases on the floor of the compartment. In a 6 berth cabin once there are 2-3 suitcases there is no room left at all. We were lucky that the train was not full. If full it would have been mpossible with luggage. "

    Bus change |
"Sadly the bus was used and not the train on this part of our trip but it was waiting for us at Villach so there were no hassles even though there was only 10 minutes between arrival of the train and departure of the bus. Obviously this part of the journey was much slower with traffic hassles and so on. "

    Best way to travel |
"Train travel was a brilliant way for my husband and I to get to Italy from Vienna. Payed extra to upgrade to first class which was worthwhile. The trip was relaxing, avoided the chaos of airports and allowed us to enjoy the scenic countryside. Would highly recommend. "

    This is first class  |
"We were warned that the first class was very mediocre . As our train was arriving around 2.30 am I did set my alarm just in case we doozed off . Thank fully I did as no surprise that no one came and pre warned us that we were reaching our destination and no loud speaker over the intercom that we had reached the statistics n . So hint !! Make sure you are ready to alight with luggage intact quickly Using rail Europe is easy but not the cheapest site for train fares "

"Good train service with a touch of the old world about it. Very helpful service from the Guard. Don't get caught in Zurich unless you have a deep wallet and want to change currency. "

    Day travel, wonderful views |
"We chose to travel during the day for the views. This was a good decision as it covered the distance in quick time and also enabled us to enjoy the scenery. "
